Always" has some very funny scenes with Pete using his angelic influence on those he encounters, capped by a hilarious moment with a crazed old man (Roberts Blossom) who seems to hear Pete's words outright.
Not that there aren't some good things in "Always," but it's yet another example this Christmas season of the sum not living up to the parts.

For all its state-of-the-art special effects, Always is essentially a remake of the 1943 Spencer Tracy-Irene Dunne fantasy vehicle A Guy Named Joe--minus the wartime context.
Richard Dreyfuss stars as a reckless fire-fighting pilot who is killed in what was to have been his final mission.

Belson's screenplay affords plenty of gushy speechifying but has nothing profound to say.
So it is that he becomes the guardian angel of Ted (Brad Johnson), a clumsy but drop-dead handsome fledgling who has fallen in love with darling Dorinda.
