A Case of Miscasting
Dec 09, 2008

Sean Penn was miscast in the role of the corrupt and power-hungry governor. Overacting, he somehow trivialized the memory of Louisiana's legendary governor, Huey Long. Still, the story resonates in an era of gubernatorial malfeasance, eg., the scandal surrounding the gov... Full review

Sean Penn is SUCH a great actor; Huey Long was such a character; Penn is wow, as usual. This is a real slow starter. Good food for thought. (Off topic, I find the range in volume in today's movies offensive.)... Full review

Story line involves southern politics a few years back - very amusing, very enjoyable, and very true to the period portrayed. Movie is long, but not noticed until you walk out. Good Job!... Full review

This film is a masterpiece of fine acting and storytelling. The negative posts some folks/critics have written is because of Sean Penn's personal progressive politics. It is not fair to condemn an excellent and worthly film because Sean Penn liberal politics... Full review

The original film from 1949 was a classic. This stale remake is yet another example of why Hollywood should learn not to churn out a remake with actors that have "name power" but are completely miscast.... Full review

The cast turns in a phenominal acting effort in this film. The story does slow a bit at times, yet it puts forth a great debate about the greater good and ends justifying the means. A very thought provoking story, this... Full review

As the extras on the DVD show, there is a solid basis to the story, and not least, that of the real Huey Long; this may not be the best version, but it has some redeeming features. And whether James Gandolfini's character as Willie's deputy is accurate or not I can't tell, but it's played way too oafishly for my liking. ... Full Review

This film is turgid and ineffectual; there's no drive or thrust. Another entry in the parade of pointless, needless remakes, Steven Zaillian's take on All the King's Men opened and closed with a whimper in the fall of 2006. ... Full Review
