Complex and Moving

'Adventureland' is a melancholy voyage into the grey zone between adolescence and adulthood, school and career, lust and relationships, frivolity and responsibility. That is to say it is not 'Superbad' and that's supergood. Upon graduating, comparative literature major James Brennan is... Full review
Not so great in the long run

Adventureland honestly was advertised as a comedy, then it just didn't turn out as one. This movie is actually just a love story with some drama behind it. No doubt that it is now a key in some comedies, but this... Full review

I can honestly say that I haven't seen as good a movie as this in a long time. Most of the characters you can relate to in some kind of way or you may possibly know someone who is similar to... Full review
Adventureland vs. Superbad :: No Contest
Apr 26, 2009
Filmmaker10 - imdb.com
Adventureland is one of the best teenage films I have ever seen. I almost am upset by the advertising plan and budget the film had because if it was given enough commercial advertisement it would've been as successful as Superbad. Sadly... Full review
A few laughs, mildly entertaining at best, poorly edited

This movie was just OK--there's really nothing surprising whatsoever, other than how much it smacks of bad editing and/or careless errors. Spoilers from now on: Each character's story is glazed over quickly, then dragged out as it plays through the current... Full review
Good "Coming of Age" Drama/Comedy

J_Trex - imdb.com
While watching this movie, it wasn't clear if this was supposed to be a comedy or a drama, so it's difficult to put this into a category. It was funny and sad, so I'd classify it as a comedy/drama. The movie... Full review
Ah, the Summer of '87!

If you were coming of age in the Summer of '87, then this film will bring back some awesome memories. The story is simple but it works on all levels. The acting is real and natural. The soundtrack is by tribute... Full review
The brilliant independent film of the year.

There's always at least one. Juno, Superbad, Little Miss Sunshine, Napolean Dynamite, etc. This is, as of March, the one to see. Realistic characters, dialog, and situations blend smoothly into a study of how people are without the Hollywoodisms to jerk... Full review

"Adventureland"- ***1/2 BY: Kevin Muller The marketing for this film is terrible, just absolutely awful. The studio is pushing this film as the next "Superbad", just because the director of that film directed this gem. The truth is, this is far... Full review
Viewers of the trailer may be disappointed; I wasn't

gregeichelberger - imdb.com
Those viewers who assume that Greg Mottola's "Adventureland" is anything like the current trailer now playing may find themselves sorely disappointed when they arrive at the cinemaplex and discover the movie is not a sequel to the director's last effort, "Superbad."... Full review

However, those loving bittersweet chuckles, and sharp funny characters, who never devolve into cartoon clowns, should love it.....From writer/director Greg Mottola (Superbad) comes Adventureland , an unflinching look at a young man's struggles with family problems, career planing angst and complicated romantic issues..... ... going in, you'll find a good movie with a strong script and solid performances, a date-night winner with a few laugh-out-loud jokes.....There's James' childhood friend Frigo, who still thinks a kick in the nuts is high comedy....But it's a simple movie, not the kind that lends itself to bloated extra discs.....The park, with its fixed ring toss games and chintzy rides, is a great setting with a built-in cast of misfits.....the acid wash and the stripey muscle shirts, and a great mix of music, from the Repla ... Like many of the best '80s coming of age tales, the film is sweet, simple and leisurely in its storytelling.....I loved ADVENTURELAND and rank it up with one of the best of 2009..... ... Full Review

Scenes We Love: Adventureland....we often want to experience perfect moments like these where we don't have to do any of the work....Jesse Eisenberg isn't necessarily one of my favorite actors, thanks mostly due to the Wes Craven abomination Cursed....though this is the best scene, it's certainly not the only good one;....I remember it anyway, thanks to movies like this with a touch delicate enough to make their romantic moments understated rather than stomped across..... ... I won't go so far as to brand the film a mess....Mottola doesn't even show much interest in the park itself, refusing to let the viewer savor the bigger picture of dilapidation and carny swindle....the film's eventual realization is a crushing disappointment.....August 26th, 2009 I'm positive "Adventureland" had a breathtaking original screenplay.....though a few actors, namely Stewart and Eisenberg, fail to break the tiresome acting bells and whistles that have come to define their careers..... ...
