Dancy charms in sweet 'Adam....the two embark with trepidation on a romance that is compelling to watch unfold and is one of the highlights of the film.....The real coup here, though, is scored by Dancy, for his truthful, delicate portrayal of Adam.....Adam" has a warm, fuzzy visual texture, but otherwise director Max Mayer breaks little new ground.....And Amy Irving does a nice, albeit brief, turn as Beth's mother, a woman who has some experience loving a difficult person herself..... ... Adam" is a warm and sweet little romance.....This portion of the movie lacks the feather-light touch of the rest of the film....the two embark with trepidation on a romance that is compelling to watch unfold and is one of the highlights of the film.....It doesn't aspire to be much more than a very good Lifetime Ailment of the Week movie -.... ... misfires at every turn, making for a tedious motion picture....to be sliced open by Beth's fixation, creates a plausible tension within the script.....keep Byrne glassy-eyed for maximum sympathy..... ... Full Review

Finessing a fine line between romantic comedy and disability tearjerker, the movie errs on the side of sweetness.....Adam (Hugh Dancy) is a handsome, aspiring astronomer with a big Manhattan apartment and a big challenge:....That familial subplot postpones the inevitable scene in which Adam has a selfish tantrum that threatens the budding relationship.....The process of teaching Adam to give and accept affection coincides with a crisis in Beth's life.... ... for all whether Adam is worth holding onto.....But their relationship is endangered, in more ways than one, when Adam meets Beth's parents ( Peter Gallagher , Amy Irving ), who treat Adam kindly but harbor understandable reservations.....Other moments are perfectly judged, such as when Adam shows Beth his personal planetarium, or when he surprises her with a spontaneous display of affection..... ... The young fellow named Adam loves to watch the skies.....But it's the speed of love, not the speed of light, that occupies Adam , a small, sweet movie about one man's widening cosmos.....But the childlike Dancy ( Ella Enchanted ) and the sad-eyed Byrne ( Knowing ) meet cute with such bumbling tenderness.... ... His performance is strong, captivating and illuminating:....Adam never makes you regret the time you spend in their company.....The most daring thing about Adam , the story of a young man with Asperger's syndrome, is....the rest of Adam is just OK.....But Dancy's eye-opening performance reveals he's a bona-fide acting talent, capable of carrying a movie without ever playing to your affections..... ... But if I had to pick the highlight of the entire film, it would have to be the ending.....Whether it be his obsession with the solar system or miscellaneous facts....Adam himself is probably one of the more charming aspects of the film....In between the romance, the film also weaves in a dramatic daughter-father subplot between Beth and her father Marty (Peter Gallagher).....he randomly spurts out attempting to maintain normal conversations with people, his character always brings out funny moments througho ... Although Amy Irving, as Byrne's mother, is wonderful to watch in a warm, melancholy performance, the subplot involving the parents distracts from "Adam's" strengths.....Adam," the story of a man with Asperger's syndrome (a form of autism) who finds romance with his neighbor is a pleasant change of pace.....The movie trusts the audience to appreciate the importance of life's mostly small dramas instead of artificially creating a lot of emotional noise -....and especially a remarkable Hugh Dancy as the quirky ...
