Jack Higgins' straightforward thriller about a guilt-ridden IRA bomber forced into "one last job" (where have I heard that plot before?) gets a snarky treatment from cult director Mike Hodges. Mickey Rourke, with alarming red hair, confesses all to the priest... Full review

Superb. Thought-provoking. Gritty. A very rare find. A kind of restrained action movie shot in a manner of "Black Eagle" with a very deep psychological implication. I'm thankful to our TV that it aired this film during the dark transition times... Full review

Mickey Rourke is a much deeper and more dedicated actor than he gets credit for. His accent in " A Prayer.." is spot on and that is quite an accomplishment that takes months of dedication. He takes his place up in... Full review

Fine character portrayals by Rourke, Hoskins, Davis and Bates. If you don't generally think highly of him, don't be put off by Rourke starring; he shines in this ensemble piece . If you only think of Hoskins as a humorous figure,... Full review

The director, Mike Hodges, seems not to realize that there's anything hackneyed or heavy-handed in the movie's good versus evil symbolism; he wants desperately for his work to be taken seriously, but as the plot asserts itself we lose interest.
These early scenes are effective enough, and Rourke, looking as if bath water hasn't touched his hide since "Angel Heart," is a compelling figure.

I was reminded of it the other day by " A Prayer for the Dying ," which is an almost obscene exploitation of that situation, a ludicrous movie about a subject that deserves more serious treatment.
I'll bet Mickey Rourke would have liked it.
