"A Night at the Opera" is one of those films you can see dozens of times and laugh just as hard as you did the first time. The brothers get mixed up with an opera company and a divo and... Full review

I didn't fully appreciate this film until my second viewing. Now I think it's one of the better Marx Brothers film. The film - filled with funny lines - has all the familiar MB trappings: good slapstick, good and bad... Full review
Classic comedy involving Otis P. Driftwood (Groucho Marx) trying to get Mrs. Claypool (Margaret Dumont) into high society--and romancing her to get her money. He figures opera is the best way and gets involved with Chico, Harpo and rising opera... Full review

A NIGHT AT THE OPERA (MGM, 1935) directed by Sam Wood, re-introduces the Marx Brothers to the screen following their five years at the Paramount studio (1929-1933) to MGM, this being the start of a new beginning and the end... Full review
awfully good but too much singing

This film is the first and probably the best Marx Brothers film made by MGM. Unlike later MGM/Marx collaborations, this film has energy and creativity. However, it also has LOTS of singing--hence, the title of the movie. That means in... Full review

Though some claim that either HORSE FEATHERS OR DUCK SOUP was the greatest Marx Brothers opus, A NIGHT AT THE OPERA has to be Marxdom's signature film. The witticisms and riotous madcap from playwright George Kaufman (THE MAN WHO CAME... Full review

No doubt that "A Night at the Opera" is right up there with "Duck Soup" as the best Marx Brothers movie. Some Marx-purists complain "ANatO" is when the brothers started to grow soft and their quality started to decline. For... Full review

"A Night at the Opera" is great Marx Brothers entertainment. It has comedy, music, and a good cast - everything except Zeppo, who by this time had left the act. It fully deserves its reputation as one of the two... Full review

This one I did not find all that great. Personally, I absolutely love Duck Soup, but I was unimpressed with A Night at the Opera. It was funny enough, sure, but, when I watch a movie by the same talent... Full review
The Marx Brothers against the world

This is probably the best Marx Brothers film. It is certainly my favorite. The brothers destroy pomposity and pretension by the ton. The pieces of comic business were worked out through many live theater performances before the scenes were finally... Full review

At least we have this wonderful film preserved forever as a guaranteed antidote for depression, and it still plays well for "normal" people of all ages. He essentially rescued their careers with A Night at the Opera and their subsequent A Day at the Races by tweaking the formula without losing the essence of their comedic genius. ... Full Review

In "A Night at the Opera" the Brothers manage to deflate every wealthy, snobby patron of the arts they can find, while at the same time managing never to denigrate the music of opera one bit. He lured them to his studio, gave them a tighter script than they had ever performed in before, a rather silly subplot involving two young lovers (Allan Jones and Kitty Carlisle), bigger production numbers, and a larger budget than the boys had ever seen. ... This film has some of the boys best comedy bits in it. The first movie the Marx Brothers did for MGM under the watchful eye of Irving Thalberg, A Night at the Opera is a comedic tour de force that was not only one of the Brother's funniest films, but also one of the most successful. ... Full Review

it never fails to make me laugh.....But "Duck Soup," today often considered their best film, was a box-office bomb....the same time managing never to denigrate the music of opera one bit.....Ms. Dumont was ideal for these kinds of roles....Forever looking to puncture the ballon of pomposity, the Marx boys found a perfect object for their manic buffoonery in the often stuffy opera scene..... ... Add to this the tried-and-tested chemistry between the leeringly flirtatious Groucho and the divine Margaret Dumont and you have one of the funniest films ever made. Around a skeleton plot involving the brothers' attempts to give a pair of Italian opera singers a big break in America, director Wood and screenwriters Kaufman and Ryskind (whose job was mainly to just contain the anarchy in the vague framework of a story) create a masterpiece of dizzying levels. ...
