If the machines are turned off in the standby mode and you hit the power button, it takes a good 40 seconds or more before the devices are ready and you can pop open the disc trays.
Blu-ray hasn't been shy about pushing firmware updates, either, and consumers should balk at having to patch their movie players just to make them functional.
