The entire cast is wonderful Viggo Mortensen, Elisabeth Perkins and Dominc West very different characters whose very differences form an impact.
Sandra Bullock is utterly convincing as the party girl, whose wild ways harbour the deep emotional pain she is desperately trying to forget.

Days shows two important thingsacting strength and the willingness to play down her looks (she comes off positively dowdy through most of the film)that indicate there's much more to Sandra Bullock than most of her career choices have indicated.
West plays deeply shallow with a charm that makes it impossible to truly dislike the character, though clearly he's a twit.

Now, I don't have kids-Hell, I don't have a wife-and I know I wouldn't be a perfect parent, and I'd make mistakes like any parent does-but I have to believe that, even on my worst days, I wouldn't take my 6-year old child to see Saving Private Ryan or Schindler's List or 28 Days on a Saturday night, any night of the week or any day of the week, for that matter. ... Verdict: Big-yuks comedy and social conscience drama don't sit well together and this is movie with a serious identity problem.
Steve Buscemi's criminally wasted in a near cameo as Bullock's counsellor, but Thomas manages to milk every predictable laugh from the rest of the ensemble.

I recall reading a review that hailed 28 Days as a very laughable comedy.
This film is so depressing it could, well, drive a person to drink.
At least, that was the word that kept surfacing in my mind as I watched this duller-than-dirt drama.

Personally, though, I quite enjoyed the film.....They'll probably call it formulaic, and fault the occasionally rote script, and point....those folks won't enjoy this movie very much.....all doubts about her strengths as an actress were washed away by the film's overwhelming goodness.....I don't like Bullock--she's an alright actress, she's been in a couple of decent flicks.... ... There's a hint of romance, but ``28 Days'' wisely doesn't go there.
For anybody who's been touched by the bitter realities of these problems, ``28 Days'' is likely to feel like 28 hours of misguided Hollywood drivel.

Eager to have it both ways, "28 Days" is too glib too often to make much of an impression any way you look at it.
For one of the problems with "28 Days" is not so much that it has the temerity to attempt the mixture of comedy and serious material, but that the comedy is so lame and the nominally weighty material is too obviously a setup.

Consider the movie's designated scene-stealer:....I kept hoping he'd revert to Mr. Pink and blacken the damn comedy --....That movie was a clever crowd-pleaser.....Sandra Bullock has a nice touch with light comedy and, despite the boozy subject matter, this stuff is a pure helium balloon.....Elsewhere, the laudable Steve Buscemi is wasted in an atypical cameo as an earnest counsellor..... ... Despite a few tense moments and a promising supporting cast (the best being Cummings' hard-partying boyfriend, played by Dominic West, a barely recognizable Diane Ladd, a prettied-up Viggo Mortensen, and an utter waste of Steve Buscemi and Marianne Jean-Baptiste), Bullock ends dunked in the saccharin yet again. ...
