bewildering ode to biblical grandeur of the motion picture.....The plot is frequently trite and predictable.....There is never a dull second in the scintillating synthesis of stunning stunts and heart-warming moments among characters who are this close to death.....Would it be right to say the stunning cinematography and special effects preside over this passionately-constructed pyramid of disaster escape and redemption..... ... *** "2012" As with family-friendly franchises, foreign horror movie remakes, and actor Ryan Reynolds, apocalyptic action flicks exist as pickable, profitable scabs in Hollywood.....Big-budget effect sequences are largely impressive, despite a scene with Cusack behind the wheel of his character's limo, driving....all of humankind will perish three years from now (a theory influenced by the Mayan Long Count calendar end date, which happens to be 12/21/12), Emmerich sets up our planet's demise with a scientifi ... while, it's brutally efficient at what it does and almost admirable in its desire to follow its sole purpose:....Another solid performance comes from Chiwetel Ejiofor as chief geologist for the White House.....The actor actually manages to emote amid the skillful CGI natural-disaster chaos.....also convinces us he is the best darn driver on the West Coast..... ... The only reason the film is remotely watchable is Emmerich's knack for assembling a good cast.....supporting players like Thandie Newton and Danny Glover elevate the film above the worst of the worst.....Time and again, the film cheers the survival of one character....It's one of the most famously idiotic sequences in film history....Cusack and Harrelson are huggable as always, Peet does a fine job.... ... And movies this crazy need to be celebrated.....if you can enjoy the film as sheer spectacle it's quite engaging.....The fact that the movie is so ludicrous and entertaining keeps us from thinking too closely about how offensive it can be in this respect.....And unlike the incomprehensible shaky-cam action sequences of Michael Bay's movies, Emmerich prefers to step back....Unfortunately, the melodrama buried beneath the destruction is pure disaster movie boilerplate..... ... The bloated feeling of the film is only exacerbated by the stock characters of the Curtis family.....the main protagonists bog down matters in between exciting moments of all-out calamity.....Hollywood director Roland Emmerich wants you dead.....our feelings are roped to such underdeveloped characters, it's downright aggravating when they're surrounded by a cast of far more interesting people..... ... 2012 makes both of those look puny.....At 158 minutes, it's also a fair chunk of movie.....There's a streak of religious mania throughout the film -.... ... Full Review

It can be liberating to watch a mindless action movie when it doesn't try to be something that it's not.....This isn't cinematic art, exactly, but nice entertainment filled with some truly great unintentional laughs and some impressively detailed special effects.....There is hardly a single aspect of the movie that is plausible, and director Roland Emmerich even mocks its own absurdity throughout.....a conglomeration of state-of-the-art special effects and a routine, B-movie action premise..... ...
