  • Plot: John Herzfeld deftly welds together a multitude of subplots-- a loser hitman and a cool assassin involved in an insurance scam; a washed-up director, turned suicidal, if only he had someone to care for his beloved dog; a snooty art dealer, wracked by kidney stones, cared for by his devoted... I know why I missed this one ...

This is nothing like Pulp Fiction. Pulp fiction is a deft piece of work crafted by a REAL story teller and artist. John Herzfeld is an "LA" movie veteren. Thats about it. This film does IMITATE the styles of artists... Read more at imdb.com
THIS is a romantic comedy?

Yes. You've seen "grunge on the run" romantic comedies--Wild at Heart (1990), Natural Born Killers (1994) come to mind, and poor waitress/crazy old man romantic comedies, e.g., As Good As It Gets (1997)--well, this is a mousy secretary/aging hit man... Read more at imdb.com
1st watched 2/5/2000 - (Dir-John Herzfeld): Interesting mish-mash of characters who all eventually fit together amidst violent crimes started by a man who seems to be used to this line of work. Despite the obvious muddle-filled lives we are able... Read more at imdb.com
Woke up at my usual 4:30 a.m. and did my usual scanning of the movie channels and come across this undiscovered (at least by me and I thought I knew almost every obscure movie) gem. Some wonderful acting by Aiello, Daniels,... Read more at imdb.com
Wow! Fantastic. A very dark humorous movie, one of the best of its kind that I know of. Like any good dark story, every character is presented very shortly and separately, in a way that you can already pinpoint every... Read more at imdb.com
One of the best movies that nobody's seen!

Unfortunately, "2 Days in the Valley" didn't get a big audience. I saw it in theaters and enjoyed it very much, and now that I bought the DVD I still enjoy it very much! This is really a unique, original... Read more at imdb.com
Weird and very watchable dark comedy/drama.

John Herzfeld writes and directs a tangled story that unravels and rewinds itself. The plot seems to involve a murder by hire that goes awry. A dozen or so Californians have their lives intersect with each going different directions. Violence,... Read more at imdb.com
Herzfelds 2 days in the valley is a different film. Borrowing styles of films such as Pulp Fiction and the more recent Crash (intertwining stories meeting each other), its an effective portrayal of what the title states. The performances are... Read more at imdb.com
Deserved more moviegoer attention.

Yes, this can be compared to "Pulp Fiction". It has a slew of twists and veers from one set of characters to another at the drop of a hat. Unlike "Pulp", however, there are many sympathetic characters mixed into the... Read more at imdb.com

In addition to the clever plot and delicious acting you get to see very early work by Charlize Theron and James Spader, either of which is worth your time. All of the characters are full-fledged characters, with not a weak... Read more at imdb.com

Inspired by a better film, Bread and Chocolate, but Valley drew me into it's ups and downs. Stoltz is great. Charlize Theron is great. Aiello, Spader, & Theron stand out in a good cast! ... Full Review

One constant is its lovely cinematography (by Oliver Wood). John Herzfeld is yet another director who sees women either as violent babes or maternal blankets to keep men warm (for instance, Glenne Headly as the art dealer's assistant, who falls in unlikely love with Aiello). ... Full Review

Ultimately, this film is pointless. Throw in a series of pointless and boring stories culminating into one stupid ending, some great Charlize Theron tits and ass plus the usual humping, and a large waste of acting talent involving Jeff Daniels, Danny Aiello, Glenne Headly, Marsha Mason, James Spader and several others, including Teri Hatcher and you get one big pointless moronic mess. ... This however just adds to the character of a beautifully observed film which relishes little background details, ultimately making it so satisfying to watch. John Herzfeld, USA 1996, 100 minutes One of the overlooked films of 1996, 2 Days in the Valley cuts through post-Tarantino pretentiousness and delivers a refreshingly amoral look at life in LA. ... It's fun to watch ``2 Days in the Valley'' in the moment, and then fun afterward to think about the way the story was put together, and all of those lives connected. The plot underlies even the most inexplicable scenes and eventually links even the most widely separated characters, but what makes the movie fun is the dialogue and the behavior. ... Full Review
